Berkeley Spring 2023 Calendar – Each year, the Office of Admissions recruits and accepts some of the nation's most promising, diverse, and dynamic students into the Berkeley student body. By a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at Tuesday night's meeting.

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter two-week break in the summer and fall and spring semesters instead. One of the weeks each semester will be remedial, allowing students who need academic help to receive it.

Under the revised 2023-2024 calendar, students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Autumn vacation 2.-13. There will be a prayer week from October 2 to 6. Thanksgiving holiday will be 22-24. november Christmas vacation for students will last from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring vacation will last from April 1 to 12, and Holy Week will last from April 1 to 5, 2024. The last day of school will be Thursday, May. 30. 2024

Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day, September 4, 2023; Weather makeup day on Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15; holiday and President's Day on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; Weather warning day on Thursday, March 28; and Good Friday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. During the meeting, he reiterated concerns about how the calendar would affect several programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and performing arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that a shorter summer … will affect athletics, the marching band and Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. "I believe the county can handle it, but I also feel like it's a big disadvantage for us. I voted for it with my conscience."

Crane added that he supports the concept of a modified calendar, with only two weeks of breaks each semester giving him a break.

"… I just don't care if we need two weeks for these breaks," Crane said. "I think a week would be enough, but the council voted for what we voted for and I support the promotion."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 would be difficult for group practice because summer camps typically last three weeks. But there are several options for group leaders.

Lawrence noted that the competition is scheduled by the state and that South Carolina has different school schedules. He also suggested holding a one-week group camp during the summer months and using the mediation period for additional group camps.

"Yes, you're used to three-week group camps in the summer, but what about a one-week group camp in the summer and using those periods for additional camps," Lawrence said. "A two-week group camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying that people will have to look at things a little differently and adapt."

As for the sports schedules, Lawrence said the competition schedules are set by the state, so it won't affect them too much. Adjustments should be made to training, especially summer training, and their timing.

"Football and other sports in the fall will definitely be halftime (games)," Lawrence said. "It's no different than playing basketball on Christmas break or playing baseball and softball on spring break."

Another concern was raised about how well a two-week recovery would work. Crain's said he's not sure the two-week breaks will serve their purpose and has heard from other people who feel the same way.

The Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

"We can have 30 minutes of intervention every day (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting…If we look at a five-hour workday during that intervention, that's 10 times more than a typical school day. Thus, in five days they receive 50 times more than a normal school day. This one-week intervention could potentially equate to 50 days of intervention, 30 minutes each, over the course of the school year."

"Everything we do for these students will be set up to help them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot this week. A few weeks ago, we heard from a school district that saw results after a week of intervention."

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and they are looking into how to do those 30 days. Among the possibilities he listed were 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"Next year will be easier because you have extra weeks," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't sound like much, but that extra week gives you a little more flexibility in your summer plans."

The chairman of the board of the school Dr. John Bradley said he had reservations about the revised calendar, but that the majority of those polled supported it influenced his decision to vote to approve it.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing that we're causing a lot of trouble for some people," Bradley said. "I apologize for that. But I still think we should do what the majority of people want, even if there's no reason or no good reason."

At a Jan. 25 meeting, board members approved the transition to the revised concept calendar, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
