City Tech Fall 2023 Calendar – A proposal for next year's Springfield school calendar calls for a full week on Thanksgiving and the last day of May for all students and staff.

For years, including in this district, classes were only released on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week, and the last day of school was in question every year until spring break.

Details of the proposed 2022-23 calendar were sent to the school board on Tuesday, which will then vote to approve or reject it.

Jason "Jay" Anderson, executive director of elementary education, said the proposal was developed with input from teachers, parents, school and district leaders and local higher education officials.

The first day of school is the first day allowed by Missouri law passed on August 22, 2019, which prohibits districts from starting the school year 14 days earlier than the first Monday in September.

"This has nothing to do with schools and learning," Anderson said, referring to the Tourism Industry Initiative Act.

He said: 80 days for the fall semester and 92 days for the spring semester due to the later start and end of the fall semester in late December instead of early January.

While shortening the fall semester would be ideal, Anderson said because of the number of high school students attending Ozarks Technical Community College and Missouri State University, the best option is to end fall classes in late December.

"We have a lot of high school students who have to finish the (fall) semester before winter," he said.

Board members raised questions and expressed concern about the slight change in semesters. Anderson said he hears the same from teachers.

It's an ongoing concern, he said. "That's why we … must continue to advocate that local control be returned to us as the school calendar begins."

This year, the district must create a calendar to meet the minimum number of school hours: 1,044.

"We've done over 1,100 hours of work in all our divisions — elementary, middle and high school," he said.

In addition to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the district is canceling classes on Labor Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day and Memorial Day.

In keeping with past practice, the district has scheduled an unavoidable spring break for the upcoming school year.

"Many of our colleagues in neighboring areas have embraced it, but some still haven't," Anderson said. "And when you're sharing with family or students or teachers or staff, sometimes it's difficult. So we always respect that."

Spring break is scheduled for March 13-17. The fourth and final quarter of the academic year begins with the return of students from this break.

Anderson said the make-up days are unnecessary because the district uses bids, not days, to create its new calendar.
