Easter story According to the Gospels, on the first day of Easter – on the 3rd day after the death of Jesus – at sunrise, the women who followed Jesus noticed that the large stone blocking his tomb had been rolled away, and the tomb was empty. The Gospel of John (20.14-16) tells how Mary Magdalene meets Jesus at the tomb, but at first she does not recognize him, but takes him for a gardener. Finally, knowing that he has risen from the dead as promised, he runs to tell the disciples the good news.

These events fulfill the prophecy that "the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinners, be crucified, and rise again in three days." (Luke 24.7).

How is the date of Easter calculated? Easter is a "movable holiday", that is, its date is not fixed in the calendar, but is calculated according to the lunar calendar, drawn up in church date tables. It is based on the date of the vernal equinox. In AD 325, the Council of Nicaea decreed that Easter always falls on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. Thus, the date of Easter Sunday could fall between March 22 and April 25. In Eastern Christianity, the date of Orthodox Easter (also known as Pesach) is the same as Easter in some years, but different in other years.
