Newberry County School District Proposes Modified School Schedule

In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a modified calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter summer and instead have two weeks off in the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks each semester will be remedial, giving students who need academic help the opportunity to receive it.

Revised calendar for 2023-24. anticipates that students will begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall break is scheduled for 2-1 p.m. October, and 2-6. October is the middle week. Thanksgiving will be held from November 22 to 24. Christmas break for students is from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break is from April 1 to 12, and the vacation week is set for 1-5. April 2024. The last day of school is Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Other holidays in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; weather makeup day on Friday, October 20; Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15; holiday and President's Day on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; weather day on Thursday, March 28; and the celebration of Good Friday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At that meeting, he again expressed concern about how the calendar would affect several programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and performing arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-2024 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that the shorter summer … will affect athletics, band and gate," Crane said after the meeting. "I'm sure the county will address this, but I also feel like this is just a huge negative for us." I voted with my conscience for him."

Crane added that while he supports the concept of a modified calendar, only having two weeks off each semester gives him a break.

"…I'm not really sold because we need two weeks off," Crane said. "I think one week is enough, but the board voted for what we voted for and I will support that going forward."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent Lawrence King said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for band training because there are usually three weeks of summer band camp. But there are several options for group directors.

Lawrence noted that competitions are scheduled by state and that there are different school schedules throughout South Carolina. He also suggested organizing a one-week group camp during the summer and using the interim period for other group camps.

"Yeah, you're used to having a three-week band camp in the summer, but what about having a one-week band camp in the summer and taking advantage of the catch-up period for another band camp," Lawrence said. "Two weeks of band camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying that people have to look at things differently and adapt to it."

As for the athletic schedule, Lawrence said the competition schedule is determined by the state, so it will not be affected. Internships must be adjusted, especially summer internships and their schedule.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely have (games) in that break," Lawrence said. "This is no different than basketball having events during Christmas break, baseball and softball having events during spring break."

Another concern expressed was how well the two-week recovery period would work. Crane said he's not convinced the two-week leave will serve its purpose and has heard feedback from others who feel the same way.

"We were able to build 30 minutes of intervention into each of our days (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty minutes of intervention is a good intensive intervention for our students in a small group setting… If we look at five hours a day during that intervention time, that's 10 times what they get in a regular school day." So for five days they get 50 times more than they get on a normal school day. One week of intervention could potentially equal 50 days of 30-minute intervention during the school year."

"Everything we do for those students will be designed to help them succeed next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot of good things this week." We actually heard from a school district a few weeks ago that they got results using a one-week intervention."

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days and they are looking at how to make it 30 days. Possibilities he cited include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, everything will be easier because you have an extra week," says Lawrence. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but it gives you a little more flexibility in your flight planning."

President of the school board Dr. John Bradley said he had reservations about the revised calendar, but the fact that most people polled were in favor played a role in his decision to vote to approve it.

"I'm going to vote for it knowing that we're causing a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry about that. But I still think we should do what the majority of people want for no reason not to, or no compelling reason."

During the Jan. 25 meeting, board members approved the move to a modified concept calendar, but did not approve the actual calendar at that time.
