The Jewish calendar is based on the lunar calendar, so holidays vary according to the Roman calendar. One of the magic of our holidays after the lunar cycle is that many of our holidays are during the full moon. When celebrating Sukkot or Passover, you can look up to the sky and see the full moon.

All Jewish holidays start at sunset, another fact that confuses the dates of Jewish holidays. Some calendars list a "day" of the holiday because it starts the night before. Other calendars will start the night before.

August 8, 2022 Ashura* (Muslim): Commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein, the third Imam, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. It marks the day that Allah rescued the Islamic prophet Moses, who parted the sea and led the children to the land of Israel.

25 Paryushan Parva (Jainism): Begins an 8-day festival of meditation and asking for forgiveness of sins. Mainly training Shwetamabar Jain, who tried to reduce his involvement in worldly affairs.

31st Ganesh Chaturi (Hindu): A 10-day festival dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the god of wisdom and prosperity.

1st Das Lakshan Parva (Jainism): A festival after Paryushan that lasts 10 days and represents the 10 fundamental virtues of Jainism. Mainly practiced by Digambara Jains.

26 (late October 5) Navatri (Hinduism): Festival of the Hindu Mother Goddess who pays homage to Shiva's wife Durga and prays for her blessings. It is celebrated according to local customs.

2 October 2021 Mehrgan (Zoroastrianism): One of the oldest known festivals and a time of love and gratitude for life. Mehrgan feasts are community celebrations (Jashn), rituals that include Thanksgiving prayers and community blessings (Afrinagan).

5th Dussehra (Hinduism): A festival celebrating good and evil. Especially Rama's victory over Alenka Demon King Ravana.

5th Yom Kippur* (Jews): The Jewish Day of Atonement. The holiest day of the Jewish year is marked by fasting, prayer and repentance.
