Lent is the annual period of Christian observance before Easter. The dates of Lent are defined by the date of Easter, which is a movable feast, meaning it falls on a different date each year. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and its observance (although not a liturgical time, as Sundays are not fast days and therefore do not count – see below) lasts 40 days, marking the 40 days when Jesus began his ministry. He had fasted in the desert before. It can also be seen to represent the 40 hours Jesus spent in the tomb before his resurrection.

Lent is a period of penance consisting of two branches of abstinence and fasting. During Lent, many Christians fast or give up certain foods, habits or luxuries – for example, meat, cakes and sweets, alcohol, smoking – for as long as it lasts (the money saved is often donated to charity). It is performed as a form of penance for prayer, meditation and contemplation in preparation for Easter celebrations and as a spiritual tool to tame the body and 'sharpen the spirit'.
Easter 2023: When Is Easter 2023?
Lent lasts 40 days and the first day is always Ash Wednesday (the day after Lent). However, there is often confusion about when Lent ends! This is partly because in reality there are always 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, and partly because of confusion between the fasting period of Lent and the religious 'season' or Lent.

Lent (what most people think of as 'Lent') begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday (not to be confused with Easter Saturday, Saturday).
Easter). It is a period of 46 days. However, the six Sundays within the period are not fast days (Sundays are always feast days in the Christian calendar) and therefore do not count towards the 40 days of Lent.

Holy Tuesday 2023. When Is Holy Tuesday In 2023
The liturgical period of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, but ends on the evening of Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday). Additionally, Palm Sunday (or alternatively the day before Palm Sunday) is sometimes considered the last day of Lent. This is false and based on a misunderstanding of the liturgical timing of Lent and Holy Week. They are not mutually exclusive, and Lent actually continues into Holy Week (see above), meaning that the liturgy of Lent ends on Holy Thursday.
Purple is the color most associated with Lent – purple church vestments (altar vestments and clerical vestments) are used during this period. The color purple is symbolic in two ways: it is the traditional color of mourning (commemorating the death of Jesus) and also a symbol of royalty (celebrating the coming of Christ as King).

In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Lent is called 'Great Lent' and is the most important fasting period of the year in preparation for the most important feast of the year, Pascha (Orthodox Easter Sunday). As in Western Christianity, Lent varies in its dates from year to year, with the dates defined by the date of Easter, which is a movable feast. Great Lent begins on Clean Monday (beginning of the 7th week before Pasha) and lasts 40 days (including Sundays) until Lazarus Saturday (the day before Palm Sunday). The fast continues till the morning of Pasha.
