Prince William County Public Schools is offering a new school calendar that includes Jewish, Hindu and Muslim holidays.

Prince William County school officials have added Jewish, Hindu and Muslim holidays to the 2021-2022 Virginia school calendar and are asking parents for input.

The school system is asking parents to take a survey by Thursday and comment on the B schedule, which "includes additional holidays that reflect the diversity of the PWCS community."

To reach the 180 days and four days off, the school system will subtract three winter vacation days and one spring vacation day from the originally approved calendar.

After survey responses are received, the school board will review and approve the 2021-22 calendar later this month.

Holidays on the 2020-21 calendar include Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidential Inauguration Day, Washington President's Birthday/Day, and Memorial Day.

Prince William School Board Approves 2021 22 Calendar With Diverse Holidays

Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. LaTanya D. McDade shared PWCS's proposed budget for fiscal year 2023. The budget invests $61 million in a 4.2 percent cost of living adjustment and increase percent for faculty and staff, resulting in an average salary increase of 7 percent for most employees.

"We began our budget development work this year with a commitment to align our investments with the priorities and outcomes outlined in PWCS Vision 2025," said Superintendent McDade. "That's why I'm pleased that Leader's Budget 2023 includes significant investment to support our classrooms and our students."

The budget adds an additional $20 million to market-based salaries for certified/counseling and classified staff. As a result of the changes, PWCS salaries are more competitive. These increases are primarily targeted at the end of our early and mid-career, where PWCS has the least parity with other school divisions competing for talent. Thus, the number of some faculty and graduate staff will increase by more than 7 percent.

In total, the budget invests approximately $10 million in additional funds for special education. This includes adding 100 full-time special education aides to provide the support students with disabilities need. In addition, the budget foresees the hiring of 13 technical assistant specialists. These professionals are critical to supporting student voice and classroom participation.

The proposal also includes the addition of 88 full-time kindergarten teachers to support critical student development. Included in the budget are 35 parent liaisons to support families, and the long-term goal is to have at least one in every school over the next four years. This budget also includes five additional social workers and additional language translation support. In addition, 15 career counselors will be added to the budget to support students and families in postsecondary education planning as well as career and technical training opportunities.

Safe and healthy schools are essential. To support this, the budget proposes to hire 29 security professionals and improve the infrastructure of cameras and emergency response systems. It also includes the recruitment of 14 additional nurses to strengthen this critical role and reduce the high student-to-nurse ratio.

Total PWCS revenue for fiscal year 2023 will be approximately $173.1 million, or a 14.1 percent increase over fiscal year 2022. The budget provides central funding for schools to work more efficiently and effectively to ensure academic progress. As the largest employer in Prince William County, recruiting, onboarding and supporting employees requires adequate human resources, resources and support staff to provide timely and consistent support.

Prince William Co. School Board Approves Calendar For 2022 23

Stakeholders have several opportunities to learn more about and discuss the proposed budget. The school board held a public meeting on Feb. 7, an open hearing on Feb. 16 and two work sessions. The school board will consider approving the budget on March 16. The county council will debate the budget before May 1.
