Rutgers Fall 2023 Calendar
Rutgers Fall 2023 Calendar – Since 1766, Rutgers Preparatory School has been preparing students for the challenges of college and beyond. In the Upper School, students enjoy our many traditions, from the first year camping trip in September to the Senior Discovery Trip just before school starts, we value the connections to the past that our traditions provide. The school year is marked by annual events like Career Day, Burger Blast, and of course Commencement, as well as daily traditions like morning assembly, when the entire high school comes together to hear students and teachers introduce upcoming events and announce athletics. the results. and academic competitions, applaud our students for well-deserved honors or share a poignant reflection.
Many of our curricular and extracurricular offerings complement the wide diversity of our community, but through daily experience working and collaborating with students and teachers from diverse backgrounds, we truly appreciate the benefits of living in a multicultural society. At Rutgers Prep, approximately 40% of our students are "students of color" – we celebrate not only Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, but also Diwali, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Chinese New Year. While many institutions promote colorblindness, we openly embrace the diversity of ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and other forms that exist in our community and use this richness to promote understanding and tolerance in our daily interactions.

University students understand the RPS motto: Severa res est verum gaudium – "Hard work is true joy." Excellence in classrooms, art studios, sports fields, performance venues and the wider communities in which students live is a direct result of their efforts and dedication. We see it in ways that are easily measured—college acceptance, standardized test scores, state track and field championships, selection for juried exhibitions or national choirs and orchestras. We also experience excellence in more subtle ways—the frequency with which high school students volunteer to read to elementary students, the management of complex data when members of a student research class present their gene sequencing results to researchers at the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University, the percentage of students who complete community service well beyond the required hours. At university, students enjoy daily challenges and work hard to meet and exceed expectations.
I Got 5 On It: Rutgers
High school students are assigned a counselor when they start school. Generally, advisors stay with their groups of about ten students as they transition from first year to graduation. The counselor plays a dynamic role in guiding students to become independent learners, active participants, and develop leaders who enrich the school and larger community. Counselors meet regularly with counselees, either for short sessions to share important information or for longer sessions to discuss specific topics. They also communicate with the base informally during the school day through their individual advice and, if necessary, through formally scheduled meetings.

The counselor's role is to actively listen, advise, praise, facilitate communication between home and school, and offer a more impartial perspective on challenges that arise. The counselor is often in a unique position to provide relevant information about the counselor's situation to parents as well as classroom teachers, coaches, or administrators to help them work with the student.
The counselor has a "big picture" view of the student's progress, both academic and otherwise, and is the student's advocate, especially during the first adjustment to college when it may be difficult for the student to have difficult conversations with teachers. The counselor is a sounding board for the student, providing guidance in dealing with situations and encouraging the student to be active in the daily life of the school community. It helps the student to set realistic and achievable goals and discusses with the student the strategies for achieving them.

Rutgers Prep encourages and supports volunteerism in its student body, with high school students completing more than 11,000 hours of community service last year despite spending most of the school year on lockdown and lockdown. As part of its curriculum requirements, Rutgers Prep expects all high school students to complete at least 10 hours of community service each academic year and reflect on the experience, and many choose to exceed our expectations. For those students who complete 50 or more hours in a given year, we offer an Honors Level Certificate. The highest recognition is the "Honors250" award for completing 250 hours per year.
At the heart of a Rutgers Preparatory education is the expectation that our graduates will be well prepared for college and life ahead. We believe that such preparation is based on the ability to be a lifelong learner: to accept and explore old and new ideas; consider the value of new ways of understanding the world; to seek better ways of knowing.

We strongly believe that students cannot prepare for their future using the tools of our past. That's why Rutgers Prep is committed to providing students and faculty with fully integrated digital resources to support learning and enhance instruction. Whether it's campus-wide wireless, innovative flipped classrooms, and our middle school iPad initiative, our goal is to prepare your child for success in college and beyond.

All classrooms at Rutgers Prep, kindergarten through 12th grade, are equipped with projectors and Apple TVs, allowing our faculty to share digital resources with their students. In addition, faculty members make extensive use of VR headsets, MakerBot 3D printers, iPads, and laptops to enhance classroom collaboration. Whether it's a digital presentation or an interactive exercise, the integration of digital and projection technology enhances teaching and learning.

In keeping with this tradition of balancing the new and the familiar, the Upper School is proud to announce the launch of an expanded iPad initiative for the 2013-2014 academic year. After much thought and discussion, one faculty member decided that all students should have iPads.
Ubiquitous and unified technology offers students and teachers better access to digital tools and resources. E-textbooks are readily available and significantly cheaper, providing a compelling alternative to traditional text.

As a Google Apps school Our faculty and students use modern management systems to enhance collaborative learning. In addition, we use a modern learning management system to facilitate communication between students and teachers beyond the boundaries of the school day and campus. Whether it's just looking up homework, contributing to a conversation, or accessing digital resources, it's a key component of our 21st century education.

In the high school humanities department, our history teachers work with students to understand the past and develop skills to apply that understanding to the world we live in today. Our goal is to inspire students to be active participants in the ongoing historical process. Our program introduces students to cultures, events and forces of change from around the world, past and present. We offer opportunities to collect and apply information and think critically about problems in the social sciences – history, geography, political theory, economics, sociology, psychology and anthropology.
In addition to these basic knowledge and skills, we try to promote responsible attitudes and actions. Emphasizing the importance and dignity of the individual, we encourage students to respect themselves and others. We introduce the principles and practices of democracy and encourage students to explore the various economic, social, political and environmental challenges of our time. Students develop an awareness of these challenges and the ability to acquire, evaluate and apply information to address these challenges. We study the past not only to understand the present, but also to understand the possibilities of the future.
Freshmen must take Foundations of Civilizations, juniors must study American History, and seniors choose a history year. Sophomore history is strongly recommended.
