After 27 years at UF, Michelle Jacobs said what she sees today is just a continuation of what has always been there: an unequal reality for black faculty and staff at UF. .

Jacobs, a law professor since 1993, was one of six black professors who spoke to The Journal about various forms of racism they experienced on campus. She and two other black employees reported receiving threats and hateful messages at work through letters, emails and voicemails.

As the new school year approaches, attention is focused on anti-racist statements by President Kent Fuchs and other department heads. Black faculty like Sociology Professor Corey McZiel say they are weary of the long-term changes it would make to an institution with a history rooted in segregation.

After joining UF in fall 2018, McZiel was the only black faculty member in his department. Black professors make up just 4.14 percent of professors on campus — 238 out of 5,747, according to UF workforce data.

"Being in an institution built on denying opportunities to some people calls for concrete action. "Inaction will only continue this trend," McZiel said.

Academics: Meds Program

He said there is a tendency to devalue and undervalue black lives, not only in the profession but also in the available curriculum.

"We have to deal with racism in addition to the heaviest teaching load because we have the least faculty and representation on campus," he said.

Adejumo has been a professor of African American studies at UF since 2011. In 2015, he spoke with UF's General Education Committee about curriculum approval to apply for diversity and humanities credit in his Black Masculinities course. He said the response from two white faculty members on the committee was tone-deaf and irresponsible. Adejumo did not remember their names and the chairman of the committee, Dr. Lindner did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

According to Adejumo, a male faculty member on the committee expressed concern that students might create a rap album for an assignment. Adejumo said the assignment was to create an album of music or spoken word, but rap music was not mentioned once in the syllabus. Teachers also expressed their dissatisfaction. Adejumo said his concern with her was that her course would "produce a lot of Malcolm X."

Although his diversity and humanities credit application was approved two years later, in May 2017, Adejumo said the allegations of those comments pointed to a source of systemic racism that needed some sensitivity training to address.

Sharon Austin, a political science professor at UF since 2001, says discrimination directly undermines the safety of black professors on campus. She said she experienced it during an incident on April 13, 2019.

Austin said she felt threatened and trapped when a white man stood in her office door, made racist remarks about black women and blocked her and a colleague's way. The assistant called the university police, but no one came, so he called again.

When they finally arrived, the officers seemed impatient, Austin said. They stayed safely outside the building, refusing to remove the mixer. "Just get out," the officers yelled at the women inside, forcing them past the man. They did it when they had no choice.

"I found it really offensive," Austin said. "If we were white, I doubt that would have happened if two white women confronted black men. I don't think the police would have told them, 'Just go away.'

When asked for comment on the above events, UF's Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing Vice President for Communications Steve Orlando responded on behalf of the university.

"All such cases reported in the university will be expedited," he said. "We continue to work to create a welcoming environment for all students, faculty and staff, and that work continues to be critical."

In 1971, 118 years after UF was founded, the university had only 3 African-American professors out of 2,600 at the time. per day in each college on campus. According to Maxiel, a big problem calls for a big solution.

"How many firms are willing to change their operational structure? How ready are you to break the system that perpetuates these things? he asks. "Changing building names does not necessarily affect retention rates or better represent our campus among diverse groups."

Going forward, the professors say they are closely monitoring developments and plan to hold the institution accountable for its promises. Amid these unprecedented calls for change, professors like Maxell say they can't help but wonder: Is this a play or is it real?

Black teachers express their fatigue by acknowledging difficult realities and waiting for change. Of the six teachers interviewed, each expressed hope for a better future balanced with doubt that history would not repeat itself.

"If someone asks me why I'm still there, I'd say there's always a point where UF feels like they can overcome any obstacle that keeps them from doing well," Jacobs said. "We're on the verge of moving on, and I tell myself to hang on a little longer."

With nearly three decades of experience, Jacobs remembers law school as a challenging work environment. The university drew national attention after associate dean Kenneth Noon stepped down, prompting other law professors who had previously worked at UF to resolve animosity during their tenures.

The spring semester runs from January 11 to April 21 without a break, with January 18 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The changes came at a meeting of the UF Faculty Senate Thursday afternoon, where the 160-member group voted to extend winter break by a week and cancel March spring break.
