Umbc Spring 2023 Academic Calendar – Eight alumni and seniors will soon travel to countries on three continents on the Fulbright USA Student Scholarships in 2022. It embraces new leaders in education, astrophysics, cybersecurity, human rights and more, and enjoys exploring difficult questions from new perspectives.
The Fulbright program is an international program of the US government. Awarded as the Best Fulbright Production Agency for 2019-2020. Over the past decade, he has received 60 Fulbright US Student Program Awards for research and education in Africa, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, South America and Europe.

This year it is the first Fulbright award for El Salvador and Great Britain. Caleb Jacobson '21, Global Studies and MA '23, Sociology studies human rights and the transition to peace in El Salvador after conflict. Kaitlyn Keaton '22, a computer engineer and researcher in cybernetics from the Center for Women In Technology, travels to Newcastle University (NU) in the North East of England to complete her Masters in Cybersecurity. NU has been jointly recognized by the UK's National Cybersecurity Center and the Research and Engineering Council as an Academic Center of Excellence in Internet Price Research.

Keaton focused on getting the most out of college education by completing several courses. He has created competing computer engineering models at General Dynamics Mission and Systems and Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, and has also participated in the Capture Flags IT competitions, but this is his first overseas study.
As a member of the Cyber Scholar and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society, Keaton is committed to further developing the skills needed for cutting-edge internet pricing research. She is also committed to creating new paths for more women and girls to become leaders in engineering.
"We want to inspire and encourage more girls and young women to join the cybersecurity world," said Keaton. "There is an important need to inspire young girls to show that they can do this too."

The anthropologist Maryam Elhabashy '21 first became interested in the healing process in the environment of the therapist's family. In high school, he pretended to be a hospital doctor and saw the patient's culture sometimes collide with the doctor's concerns. He wondered if a lack of traditional medical knowledge could hinder effective medicine and harm his health.
Elhabashy found an answer from different cultural perspectives. As a history student with a focus on medical history, he discovered that listening to people can help doctors develop empathy. This is one way for patients to feel that they can hear, understand and manage medical procedures that will give them the best possible care.
While in, Elhabashy earned his master's degree to study "Bubble and Muslim Wellbeing in the Baltimore-Washington Area". He also worked as a research assistant in sociology, anthropology, and public health (SAPH), researching the physical activity of African American adults in Baltimore.

After graduating from college, Elhabashy worked as a research assistant at Rutgers University, researching ethnic tobacco and tobacco use. Last year, he worked in the National Institutes of Health Amgen Fellowship Program, working with leading biomedical scientists to identify and address health problems caused by social, cultural and environmental factors.
During Fulbright's academic year, Elhabasha will be living in Kuwait to undertake a research project at the University of Kuwait entitled "Faith, Family, Food and Power: Studying Obesity Trends Against Kuwaiti Women."
He said, "I hope one day I will be able to lead the movement towards personalized medicine based on the interaction between individuals and cultures." "I hope my experience in Kuwait will serve as a solid foundation for this work."

Adrianna-Marie Urbina-Ruiz '21, Maths and MAT, Elementary Education grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland, but her roots go back to Venezuela. He remembers growing up with four Latin teachers. They are all teachers of the Spanish language and support his academic and personal development. However, Urbina-Ruiz believed that some teachers had limited opportunities due to low expectations of them and saw other Hispanic students struggle with the same experience.
Urbina-Ruiz said: "Many Hispanic students who study English and are bilingual are believed to have limited knowledge and academic potential." "I want to stop talking about it."
In the year Urbina-Ruiz met Bonny Tighe, a senior math teacher, who encouraged her to become a math and science teacher under the Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program.

Urbina-Ruiz also holds a Master's degree as a teacher and is authorized to teach English to speakers of other languages. Urbina-Ruiz will be working on the creation of her first collaborative international online degree program during the Fulbright academic year. It will connect students from the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia with students from Maryland while learning English. Urbina-Ruiz said: "Latin teachers are needed all over the world.

Urbina-Ruiz plans to retrain at Baltimore City public schools, where there is a high demand for bilingual Hispanic teachers.
Like Elhabashy, Maithily Diana Díaz '21, Biology and Modern Languages, Linguistics and Cultural Communication, she continues her career with an emphasis on equal health. Former student Díaz encourages other Latinos to go to college and persevere, even if that means STEM has the chance to be the only Latin American she has ever experienced as a Latin.
"I was once the only Latin woman, but now that means more," said Díaz. "It's just a leap of faith that Latinos can become scientists, researchers and doctors. If we believe in ourselves, others do too. And when that door opens, who knows how far we can go?"

Díaz recently moved to Tijuana, Mexico to work at a non-profit health clinic that supports many refugees and immigrants. In the past school year, she taught science and medicine to primarily Hispanic and African-American elementary and high school students at the Harlem Refugee Health Coalition, and completed postgraduate studies in mental health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
During Fulbright's academic year, Díaz will complete his Masters in Immunology from the French National Institute of Health and will be attending the Sorbonne University, working on cancer research. .
"It's a dream for a person like me to get Fulbright in an institution like this," said Díaz. "My students are amazed. They want more and they want to achieve it. But in the end, it's for my community.

During his stay in France, Díaz will work with scientists who are looking for more effective treatments for soft tissue sarcoma. This study could reveal new immunotherapy targets for a variety of cancers.
As a linguist with knowledge of English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Russian, Díaz knows that the ability to communicate effectively across cultures and languages can lead to more space. It wants to show what can happen when people in Latin America value different cultures and languages as assets.
Mimi Yaldram '20, history knows very well the process of learning about new cultures and countries. When he was seven, his family left home in Karachi, Pakistan, and traveled to the United States in search of better mental health services.

"We arrived just before September 11, 1999," said Yaldram. "It took a long time to deal with discrimination in Muslim families while learning how to live, study, use services and work in America."
He enrolled at Montgomery College. There, he performed many student leadership roles and traveled overseas to Ethiopia to research ancient trade routes and Indian influence on currency.

Duke Set To Break Ground On Softball Stadium
In 2017, Yaldram joined the Shady Grove campus as president of the Students' Historical Association, providing new opportunities for students, including studying abroad in Denmark. She learned about the history of the Vikings and took part in dance projects focusing on Danish pop dance and Pakistani Bollywood dance.
Yaldram identifies as a student with an intellectual disability and enjoys mentoring and teaching other students with special needs or a neurological disability. For two years, she has been teaching students with autism spectrum disorders to improve their writing, communication and social skills.
Now she is certified in both teaching English as a Second Language and Mental Health.
