We cover everything from Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.
January is usually the holiday hangover month at Walt Disney World. Some of the Christmas fun continues for a few days in early January, and the decorations are still going on for the first half of the month. The big draws in January are the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts and the Walt Disney World Marathon.

Other than those events, January was relatively quiet. Most of the visitors who want to visit in winter do so in November or December of the previous year. People who start planning their New Year's trip usually don't arrive until Easter or spring break. So, from easy crowds to perfect weather, there are many advantages to traveling in January. Of course, there are disadvantages…
Best Time To Go To Disney World
I'll be honest: I wasn't a big fan of Walt Disney World until mid-January. It's really like a hangover for me. There are odd decorations that look out of place or forgotten, and the weather can be chilly. This is purely a matter of personal preference as I know some people are happy to see the Christmas decorations without having to deal with the crowds. Personally, when Christmas is over, I'm done with the holidays.

If you go by historical averages, January is the coldest month of the year at Walt Disney World. In my experience, the weather from November to February can range from cold to mild, but January is earlier than the other winter months. Expect temperatures to generally be in the upper 40s to lower 70s.
Packing for January weather requires preparing for a wide range of weather conditions, and you should pay attention to the forecast before you travel so you don't get surprised by 30-degree weather or the 90-degree range. There is no clothing that is suitable for both seasons and extremes.

Between the EPCOT International Arts Festival and the Walt Disney World Marathon, January isn't the sleepy month it used to be. We absolutely love the annual arts festival, which usually starts in mid-January and runs through President's Day weekend in February. For more information and tips about this special event, read our guide to the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts.

Walt Disney World Marathon 2023 will be held live and in person from January 4 to 8, 2023. If you're planning to run the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon, check out our fool's guide to the Disney Run.
When To Avoid Planning A Trip To Disney World In 2023
Typically, a "holiday hangover" lasts several weeks at Walt Disney World. During that time, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and (to a lesser extent) Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom parks are still decorated for Christmas. There is no other Christmas fun (our Ultimate Walt Disney World Christmas Guide has the most), and absolutely nothing else.

However, it is mostly because of the Walt Disney World Marathon. Many runners postpone their November or December trips to attend the festival in early January and enjoy the sight of sparkling Christmas decorations on the course in the early morning. As a result, most of the decorations remained until the weekend and were removed shortly thereafter. It's unclear when the holiday decor will be removed in January 2023, but our guess is mid-month.
Check out Walt Disney World's renovation schedule for other attractions closing in January 2023. Just a word of caution: When it comes to actual construction work, it can be very deceiving. Over the next few years, there will be a lot of construction going on all over Walt Disney World.

The major project that will have the biggest impact on the visitor experience is the massive renovation of the front of EPCOT, which will remove Future World and replace it with 3 new neighborhoods. The project has gone up fast, and the front half of EPCOT is a maze of construction walls. This unprecedented arrangement prompted us to ask (and answer) whether you should visit EPCOT.
Additionally, several additions to Epcot will open in March 2023. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, Space 220, and Harmonious will all be unlocked. How much more will be revealed remains to be seen. At Epcot, there is the Play Pavilion, Moana's Journey of Water, and many more.

There's also Magic Kingdom's TRON Lightcycle Run roller coaster, which will open in January 2023 if we're lucky, and at the beginning of summer if we're unlucky. More new attractions and entertainment will be introduced in 2023. For an overview of what's on the horizon, see What's New and Next at Walt Disney World in 2023 and Beyond.
Walt Disney World Calendar Of Events 2023
It's been a real rollercoaster of a month when it comes to the January 2023 crowd calendar for Walt Disney World. In true "holiday hangover" fashion, the beginning of the month was very busy. As we discuss in this section, busy calendars also increase elsewhere in January, a relatively quiet month.

If your Walt Disney World vacation starts before the end of the holiday season, we have a post about visiting Walt Disney World in the New Year that you might want to check out. Any day of your trip before New Year's Day, you can expect the worst crowds of the year at Walt Disney World. There is a drop on New Year's Day, but not as much as before.
No color-coded group calendars here, because we hate them the most. If we had a visual group calendar graphic here, most of you would just look at it and not read the description of what you can do.

Walt Disney World Group Calendars While they can be a useful tool, team calendars are one piece of a larger puzzle. Since your travel dates are less reliable than they used to be, choosing only a group calendar is risky. Walt Disney World can manipulate park reservations, staffing, closings, and capacity – resulting in people feeling that it doesn't reflect actual attendance or organic demand.
As a general matter, we want to warn you that winter is not the "season that never sleeps" at Walt Disney World. Winter is not out of season at Walt Disney World, we explain how crowds increased in January and February from 2017 to 2017, why last year was so unexpected, and how it's back to normal.

In the first two months of the year, there are various cases of congestion. Everything from RunDisney events to weekends and school holidays speed up arrivals and wait times. With all that in mind, here are our team's calendar predictions for the best and worst weeks at Walt Disney World in January 2023.
Disneyland Crowd Calendar
If we had to pick one week to visit Walt Disney World this month, it would be the week starting January 9, 2023. Not only is this week the least crowded, but EPCOT shouldn't be because it's right before the Arts Festival starts. Full of locals to start the event.

Another good time to visit is the last half week of January 2023 to early February 2023.
If possible, we recommend avoiding January 1-4, 2023 as many local schools still have school holidays for these dates. It will get worse

Disneyland Crowd Forecast Calendar
During the holiday weekend, the block is lifted on January 3rd for most Floridian Annual Pass holders, leading to an increase in visitors that day. Fortunately, Osceola County and Orange County schools will reopen on January 5, 2023, which will provide relief for a few days.
However, the 2023 Walt Disney World Marathon will be held from January 4-8, 2023, so the crowds won't last long. The main event for that is on January 8, but runners

Instead of arriving early and enjoying the parks before the race, they extended their stay until the following week. So on January 9, 2023, things will really start to fall apart.

Another time to avoid is January 13-16, 2023. This is Martin Luther King Jr. A weekend day and usually lots of people. However, it usually does not have a disproportionate impact from Tuesday to the following Friday. Since Christmas and New Years are just around the corner, most people don't take a full week or so off.

Then there is the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated on January 22, 2023. This is another holiday that has little impact at Walt Disney World – it makes a big splash at Disneyland.
Overall, we expect occupancy levels to be roughly similar again for January 2023.
