Last academic year, the campus focused on mental health and well-being as the community and nation faced a youth mental health crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To develop a culture of health that promotes healthy habits, behaviors and decisions that permeate all areas of the community, President Leshin established the Mental Health and Wellness Task Force (MHWBTF) in September 2021, comprised of students, faculty and staff. . The task force's primary task is to gather input from all community members to better understand the intersection of mental health and wellness and higher education challenges, and to find new ways to support the community.

Led by co-chairs Jean King, Peterson Family Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Matt Barry, associate director of the Student Development and Counseling Center (SDCC), the task force includes more than 35 students, faculty and staff. A survey, town hall listening sessions, and many other resources to identify high-level outcomes are provided to the community, including students, faculty and staff, and three reports targeting underrepresented groups on campus.

The task force turned over its work to the Mental Health Implementation Team (MHIT), led by Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Philip Clay and Director of Emergency Management Ron Bashista, to ensure continued implementation of the task force's recommendations. . MHIT leadership reviewed task force recommendations, recommendations from an independent review of mental health practices at Riverside Trauma Center, and input from student leaders who represent strong parents and advocates from other communities. Input and recommendations were synthesized to prioritize MHIT's initial work, focusing on six areas: student life, faculty, programs, training and services (including the Wellness Center), first-year experience, communications, and faculty and staff.
