Three Rivers Local School District

In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education adopted a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised schedule, students will have less summer, instead two weeks off between the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks each semester is make-up week, allowing students with academic needs the opportunity to receive it.

Students begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 according to the revised schedule for 2023-24. October 2-13 is scheduled for a fall break, and October 2-6 is a week off. Thanksgiving break is November 22-24. Students' Christmas break will be from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break from April 1 to 12, with a week off from April 1 to 5, 2024. Last day of class is Thursday, May 1, 30, 2024.

Other locations on the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023; Friday, October 20 is Weather Decoration Day; January 15 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Holidays and President's Day on Friday, February 16 and Monday, February 19, 2024; A weather makeover day on Thursday, March 28; and Good Friday holiday on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Only board member Jason Crane voted against the schedule. During the meeting, he again expressed concern about how the schedule would affect various programs, including sports, orchestra and the Gateway performing arts program.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed schedule for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting on Tuesday.

"I'm concerned that the shortened summer will affect the athletics, the band and the Gateway," Crane said after the meeting. "I'm confident the district will fix it, but I also feel it's a big loss for us. I voted according to my conscience."

Crane added that he supports the idea of ​​a revised schedule, adding that two weeks off each semester gives him time off.

Crane said: "… I'm not selling because that break takes two weeks. "I think a week is enough, but the council voted what we voted for and I will support it.

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the band's activities will be more extreme in the summer of 2023 because there are typically three weeks of the band's summer camp. But band directors have many options.

Lawrence notes that tournaments are scheduled state by state, and South Carolina has different school schedules. He suggests organizing a week-long band camp in the summer and using the intermissions for additional band camps.

"Yeah, you're used to having a three-week band camp in the summer, but what about taking advantage of those times to run a one-week band camp in the summer and additional band camps? " Lawrence said. "One two-week band camp in the summer and another in the fall. I mean, people need to look at things a little differently and adjust accordingly."

Regarding the sports schedule, Lawrence said that the competition schedule is regulated by the state, so it will not be affected much. Practices need to be adjusted, especially summer practices and their schedules.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely be in that gap (games). "Holding basketball events over the Christmas break is not the same as hosting baseball and softball events during spring break."

Another concern expressed is how well the two-week remedy will work. Crane said he doesn't believe the two-week break served their purpose and has heard comments from others who feel the same way.

"We can include a 30-minute intervention into each of our days (during the school year). "Thirty minutes of intervention in a small group setting is a good, intensive intervention for our students… If you look at that intervention in a five-hour day, that number is 10 times more than a single intervention. normal school day. So in five days, they get 50 times what they get in a normal school day. That intervention week could equate to 50 intervention days during the school year, 30 minutes each.

"Everything we do for those students is designed to help them succeed in the coming quarter," says Lawrence. "I think we can do a lot of good that week. In fact, we heard from one school district a few weeks ago that it was seeing results from a week-long intervention."

Regarding the gateway, Lawrence said it will be 30 days and we are looking at how to do it in those 30 days. The possibilities he mentioned include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, things get easier because you have an extra week," says Lawrence. "An extra week isn't much, but that extra week gives you a little more flexibility in how you plan your summer."

President of the School Board Dr. John Bradley said he was concerned about the revised calendar, but the majority of those surveyed were in favor, which influenced his decision to vote through the calendar.

"I will vote yes knowing that we are creating a lot of problems for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry about that. But then again I felt like I had to do what most people don't want to do.

During a meeting on January 25, board members approved the transition to the revised calendar concept, but did not approve the actual calendar at the time.
