For the first time, the Broward County School Board has approved a calendar to recognize Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.

On April 21, 2023, recognition was given to Muslim students, parents and staff. The school will be closed during the day.

Laurie Board President Rich Levinson voted against the proposal to recognize Eid al-Fitr, saying he did not want to open the school year a day earlier to accommodate the holiday. The first proposed day of admission was Wednesday, August 17, 2022, but the board moved it to Tuesday, August 16, 2022 to allow for holidays.

"Ten to 15 years ago, we had a big movement in this state to not have to open more than two weeks before Labor Day," Rich Levinson said. "Many, many parents are involved in it. … I know many parents have plans for the summer; They have relatives in other states starting after Labor Day."
