The Unalaska school board is considering changing the district's calendar and is seeking community input.
Asu Academic Calendar 2022 2023: Important Dates
At their meeting Wednesday, board members discussed three different options for plans for the upcoming school year, one of which was created by member Kerry Mahoney. This pushes back the entire school year and puts the first day of school on September 5 two to three weeks later than usual.

"[The calendar] was proposed on things that I think are good for family life," Mahoney said at the meeting.
He said the entire August holiday gives families vacationing on the island more time to enjoy the short Aleutian summer.

"I like the idea of enjoying the fullness of August before we jump into the hustle and bustle of school and sports," Mahoney said.
The draft also moves from the end of the first quarter to the end of January before winter break. Mahoney said it allows older children to enjoy holiday gatherings and events more than stressing over finals, which usually take place right before winter break begins.

Athletic director and high school principal Jim Wilson said he is concerned that moving the first day of school to September could negatively impact fall sports such as cross country and swimming.

He said the Alaska School Activities Association still expects districts to begin practicing in August in preparation for the regional and state championships.
"If they start a month or a month and a half later than everyone else, you might find that kids don't want to swim or cross country," Wilson said.

Mahoney's calendar also pushed the last day of school to June 14, after the general dismissal in mid-May.
Cross country coach and preschool teacher Joni Scott said pushing school that far — when the days are nearly 17 hours — wears kids out mentally and physically.
"When you get to the end of June and they've had two or three months now where they've only gotten seven hours of sleep, their brains can't function and learn," he said.

Mahoney's draft could make summer school a challenge, as administrators say it would push it to the end of the summer. Staff and parents at the meeting said families often don't want to stay this late in the summer.

Board members say they want to hear from community members about draft school year proposals. The administration has not decided when the final election will be held. If necessary, they can wait until next autumn to choose.
Previous calendars and blank templates — which community members are encouraged to fill out — are available on the district's website. The board's draft will soon be available online, administrators said.

Please review carefully the summer COVID safety updates from the Chancellor regarding masks, testing and our caring community.
You may remember that earlier this year the Graduate Division became the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs in recognition of Postdoctoral Affairs joining the team last summer. FYI: We use the acronym GEPA, pronounced "Geh-puh" (using a hard "g" sound). So it started showing up in some cases, especially in cases where the full name didn't match. Please help spread the word!
