Uncc Spring 2023 Calendar – CHARLOTTE, N.C. () – The transfer date for more than 6,000 UNC Charlotte students is near, but more than 300 students who applied for on-campus housing are still homeless.

Last week, the university said 440 students applying for campus housing were told they would not be offered housing. To put this in perspective, the entry change is August 17-20.

"As you already know, the demand for housing on campus for the fall of 2022-spring of 2023 is very high. Due to the high demand and the lack of cancellations that we usually see now in the summer, we expect We will not be able to assign you a seat before the start of the fall semester," the Housing and Residence Life office said in an email.

Branch officials say that the demand for housing increases every year, but the problem is the decreasing number of cancellations, which gives more space for students to wait for work. Cancellations occur on a case-by-case basis.

Officials said 8,000 people applied, but not all registered by June 1. Assignments are made based on when students apply and what is available when they apply.

Destinee Lattimore is a rising high school student and has lived on campus for the past year. She applied on the last day, June 1, before the 2021-2022 school year, and was briefly assigned. This year, she applied on May 20 and was told in July that she was not assigned.

Lattimore lives in Lexington, NC and said commuting to work is not an option because she doesn't have her own car and Lexington is almost an hour away from the university, so she needs an on-campus job.

"I don't have a car, I can't live off campus because that's the monthly rent, so how do I get to work and class when I leave school," Lattimore said.

Fizza Ibrahim also has until June 1 to apply. She is a sophomore and will be living on campus for the 2021-2022 school year.

"I'm really sorry it took so long to tell me because it's only a few weeks into the semester," Ibrahim said.

On July 14, the university extended the deadline for students to cancel their housing contracts. Students who cancel a contract before July 29 will not be penalized and their entire deposit will be refunded.

The faculty is in contact with off-campus partners, including student housing and hotels, to meet student needs and inform students by email that such arrangements are being implemented.

"We are committed to providing accommodation for all students who have until the June 1 review deadline. We are working with partners on and off campus to complete the accommodation here. The university said in the update that all off-campus residents will be assisted in the management of properties in accordance with the university's housing standards, including the presence of counselors, boarding programs, accommodation, access to supervision and staff. Emails from the university to students also state that students assigned to stay off campus will not be charged more than students assigned to stay on campus.

Ibrahim says there is not enough time for students to pay for off-campus housing and not even think about how they will pay their monthly rent in the off-campus apartment.

Ibrahim lives in Apex, more than two hours away. She also can't work from home or live in an off-campus apartment because she doesn't have her own car and can't afford monthly rent.

"If they happen to put us in an off-campus residence, I hope they provide public transportation from those apartments and to campus," Ibrahim said. "It's a big deal for a lot of students who can't afford a car."

Lattimore said she will sign up for another week before canceling her housing contract and has decided to stay home with her family and attend a local community college. The sacrifice she did not want to make lost memory on campus and friends, but the sacrifice she had to make to have a place to live.

"I would go to a community college and take my course at a community college and they would ask to transfer schools because they didn't have enough housing for me," Lattimore said.

According to the University of Housing and Residence Life website, Out-of-Campus Real Estate has a unit available on July 13 that should be used as a guide along with academic advisors, planning courses and meeting graduation requirements.
