In a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the revised calendar, students will have a shorter summer and instead have a two-week break in the fall and spring semesters. One week each term will be remedial week, allowing students who need academic support to have this opportunity.

The revised 2023-24 calendar includes students starting Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall vacation will be October 2-13, and October 2-6 will be Holy Week. Thanksgiving will be November 22-24. Christmas break for students runs from December 20, 2023 to January 3, 2024. Spring break will be April 1-12, and Holy Week will be April 1-5, 2024. As for athletic schedules, Lawrence said the tournament schedules are determined by the state, so there won't be much of an impact. Practices, especially summer practices and times, must be adjusted.

"Soccer and other fall sports will definitely be there during the break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than spring events with basketball, baseball and softball during Christmas break."

Another concern was how good the two-week fix would be. Crane said he doesn't believe the two-week hiatus will achieve its intended goals, and he's heard from others who feel the same way.

"We can build a 30-minute intervention into every day (of the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good, powerful intervention for our students in a small group setting…If we look at a five-hour day in that intervention period, that's 10 times longer than a typical school day. So the day five is 50 times longer than a typical school day. That one week of intervention can be 50 days of 30-minute intervention at once during the school year."

"Everything we do for those students will help them be successful next term," Lawrence said. "I think we can do a lot in that week. We heard from the school district a few weeks ago that they were seeing results after using the intervention for a week."

As for the gate, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and they are looking at how to do it in those 30 days. The options mentioned are 20 or 25 days in the summer, five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After a year, everything will be easier because you have an extra week," said Laurence. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but this extra week provides more flexibility in the summer schedule."

Chairman of the school board Dr. John Bradley said he had reservations about the revised calendar, but decided to vote to approve it because most respondents supported it.

"I'm going to vote knowing that we're causing a lot of trouble for some people," Bradley said. "I apologise for that. But again I feel we should do what most people want for no reason or many reasons. "
