GEORGETOWN — Georgetown County students may see more days off in the future, but they'll be starting school under planned changes to the district's academic calendar for the next two years.

Chalice Waites, the district's human resources director, told the school board at a Jan. 18 meeting that the committee planning the calendar saw other South Carolina school districts move to a modified year-round format and wanted to follow suit.

Board Approves Modified Calendar For 2022 2023

The revised year-round calendar still allows for eight weeks of summer vacation and requires students to attend 180 school days, but the days are spread out more throughout the year.

The main difference between the two calendars is that students get one week off each quarter. Students traditionally have one week until Thanksgiving, two weeks until Christmas, and one week until spring break.

Pupils now have a week's holiday in October, November and April, plus the usual two weeks for Christmas throughout the year.

Greenwood District 50 Calendar

Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, teachers will begin on July 26 and students will return on August 2. The last day of the semester is December 20 and the academic year ends on May 24.

This school year, teachers returned on August 11th and students started on August 18th. Traditionally, the first semester ends after the Christmas holidays in mid-January. School ends on June 3.

To transition to the new class schedule, the district is planning a bridge year in 2022-23, similar to the traditional calendar, but with teachers and students returning to school earlier than before.

Next school year, teachers will start on August 1st and students will return to class on August 8th. The last day of the semester is December 16, 2022 and ends on January 13.

"I like the idea of ​​the semester ending in December," school board member Bill Gaskins said of the proposed changes. "Instead of cutting that period between when our students come back and the start of the second semester."

Waites said one of the committee's goals is to have classes completed before Memorial Day in the future.

Harrison County Schools Academic Calendar 2021 22

The Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its Tuesday night meeting by a 6-1 vote and with two board members absent.

With the changed calendar, students have a shorter summer and instead have a two-week break between the fall and spring semesters. One week of each semester is an aid week, which provides an opportunity for students who need academic assistance to receive it.

Board member Jason Crane was the lone vote against the calendar. At the meeting, he again expressed concern about how the calendar would affect several programs, including athletics, band and the Gateway Performing Arts program.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.
