Penn State Academic Calendar 2023 – Penn State will recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day and June 11 as official university holidays beginning in 2023, the university announced May 6.
In recent years, Penn State has recognized the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day by canceling campus and university-sponsored activities to encourage participation in service activities, festivals and celebrations. However, this day was not officially designated as a holiday in the academic calendar.

"The suspension of these two important days on public campuses is part of our ongoing efforts to align Penn State's policies with our values of diversity, equity and inclusion," then-Penn State President Eric Barron said in a statement. "Recognizing them as official university holidays gives students, faculty and staff the opportunity to observe and honor these holidays in their own unique way."
State College School Board Postpones Calendar Vote To Get Feedback
June 2021 was declared a federal holiday, marking the end of slavery in the United States after the freeing of 250,000 African-American slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. Pennsylvania officially declared this annual event a state holiday on June 19, 2019. , now Penn State is set to follow suit.
"This is a holiday for all of us to reflect on the black experience in American history and to celebrate the progress that has been made and those who have made that progress possible," said Marcus Whitehurst, vice chancellor for academic equity.
The updated policy promises Penn State students, faculty and staff a day off from classes and other work-related activities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and June 1. Additionally, this change will not affect any previously scheduled university holidays or holidays.
