The first day of school is September 7, 2022 and the last day of school is June 21, 2023, unless there is a snow day.

Columbus Day is not on the school calendar. However, Woodbridge parent Jimmy Dabrowski spoke at the meeting and asked the school board to officially put Indigenous Day on the school calendar. Dabrowski is the father of a fourth-grader in the Woodbridge school system.

The city of Woodbridge holds a Columbus Day celebration and flag raising every October, and Dabrowski said he disagrees and wants the school board to condemn the city's Columbus Day celebration.

"If the Klan comes in with a white hat, you can't tell me you're not going to say anything. I'm not buying it," Dabrowski said. "We have to fix it, it's unforgivable, I'm not the only one in this community who feels that way, Proud Boys are not welcome in this community, and if you're a member of the community don't say so, . But leaders should say it."

The Woodbridge school board refused to do so, and board attorney Jonathan Busch (who is also Metuchen's mayor) said any such resolution would be an "executive" and "legally invalid resolution that just says something."

"Columbus Day is not on our school calendar. We can't control any other entity or what other people do, but Columbus Day is definitely not on our calendar," said Kendall Ali, director of diversity, equity and inclusion.

This is a new position created last year in the Woodbridge School District and Ali is a new hire.

Ali said Woodbridge Public Schools has increased the number of multicultural clubs, increased opportunities for students to discuss identity-related issues and is working to increase the diversity of its staff and faculty.

"We have daily conversations about how we can improve," said Woodbridge Principal Dr. Dabrowski responded to Dabrowski's comment. Joe Massimino. "The big thing that we're trying to push is what it means when we talk about celebrating diversity and equality and inclusion. I think sometimes unfortunately it's limited to race and culture. And no, it's broader than that. I think we've been very fair in the way we're getting close to it. . . we've had great success."
