So far this year, the district has stayed back in September even though other Illinois districts have moved their start dates earlier and into early August. The last time CPS tried an August start was almost a decade ago, going back to September of the following year.

Officials are proposing two options for next year, with families' votes playing into the district's final decision.

Both calendars will begin before Labor Day, including 176 days of instruction and no classes during the entire Thanksgiving week — a departure from the usual three days during the holiday week. Winter and spring will cover the same time period: Dec. 26-Jan. April 6 and 3-7.

One common schedule will be seen this year, with classes starting on August 29 and ending on June 14 and the first semester ending in January after the winter break.

Parents are asked to choose two calendar options for 2022-23, including Option 1, which is the same as the current schedule.

The second option has more important changes and will start and end a week earlier, from August 22 to June 7. school year. This calendar will be closer to the calendar of suburban districts and local colleges and universities.

"The new academic calendar will set the tone for the 2022-23 school year, so it's important that our families play an active role in shaping it," CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said in an email to families Thursday.

Officials said about 200 principals participated in surveys and focus groups to help make the two choices.

CPS saw lower-than-usual first-day attendance when trying to start pre-Labor days this year — 91.2% showed up compared to an average of 94.3% from 2016 to 2019 — though that may also be related to the pandemic. The last class started before the holidays, in the 2013-14 school year, about 93.5% attended school on the first day.

Families have long appreciated the ability to wrap up their summer and vacation plans before returning after the long Labor Day weekend, but the school year has dragged on into June. Classes didn't end until June 22 of the last school year, at the latest because Labor Day fell on September 7.

Some parents and teachers complain that the later start of CPS also means less preparation time for standardized tests, college entrance tests like the ACT and SAT as well as tests for Advanced Placement classes.

CPS may be late to the trend but it follows at least two dozen districts in Cook County — with dozens more in DuPage, Kane, Lake and Will — that have started bringing their children back to class in mid-August of the new year.

In 2004, only 16 of about 1,000 school districts statewide had teachers or students back on August 14, according to records kept by the Illinois State Board of Education. In 2019, more than half of the state's 910 districts saw teachers return or classes begin on that date.
