Matc Academic Calendar 2023
Matc Academic Calendar 2023 – A few things I've learned from living in Wisconsin all my life are local control; Demonstrated positivity and a hard work ethic are valued. Everything is "fine" on the face and it's no harder now than anyone else so there's no reason to complain or get angry. Speaking with counselors across the state, educators and counselors are not "enough," and local controls during the pandemic have made it harder for schools and administrators to make decisions than before. Parents are worried and many students have left. It just doesn't feel right. As an organization, We do everything we can to make things easier for you. We strive to find grab-and-go resources that require no extra effort on your part to implement. We also encourage you to participate in opportunities created by WSCA to connect with your colleagues who understand your challenges and can support you to do your best now.
We need to shout out the California Caring Coalition for the love to see and share the graphic below that is going viral on social media. Where are you in this routine? What small steps can you take now to get through these difficult times? If you're looking for ideas for what they look like; We've included resources below that were created for health care professionals, but can actually be used by school counselors as well.

Meet The Students
It was the spring of 2004. I just finished 8 years as a school counselor. Our District Consulting Group has contracted with Mark Kuranz to provide us with several PDs for the new ASCA National Model. During Mark's meetings, I started thinking about what it means to be a school counselor leader (in fact, this new model really encourages the idea). After the course I took Mark aside and had a conversation about my view (still young in the career) that there is little professional development focused on leadership skills for school counselors. I'm sure Mark was busy after a long day of training, but Mark was great at listening to me.

After that day, I focused on finding leadership opportunities. I immediately contacted the district office to see if there was any way I could get funding to attend the summer ASCA conference. Fortunately, I had an account with a balance and ran to Orlando to attend my first national convention last summer and no one knew. I was relieved to see Mark talking to someone in the hotel lobby. Want! Someone I know from Wisconsin. After he waved at me, the person he was going to talk to walked up to me and obviously came out to talk. Ed Coyle, president of the Wisconsin School Counselors Association, introduced himself. Ed told me he was looking for a union treasurer and Mark told him I was looking for a professional leadership opportunity. Now Mark is taking the liberty of interpreting our early spring conversation, and Ed asks him to do the cash register, and I'm sure he's going to be seen all over the hotel without any interest. Organized and waved, "Ah! Steve is my escape plan. I'm going to change the conversation." Then Ed told me to ask. It was an unverified account and I'm sure it happened.
Now, almost 17 years later, I continue to be an active advocate for the work as a WSCA leader. And I had a lot of opportunities to learn during this time. First Treasurer then President of Professional Development & Education; President of SPARC-W (now WSCPAR); Conference Chair Policy Management Trainer became my current Board of Directors position as Chair. And they all started with the dreaded question in my mind, "What does leadership look like in school counseling?"

Board September 24, 2013
Obviously, there are many ways to practice leadership in our industry. Becoming an effective student advocate requires leadership. students parents employees Educating administrators and the public about the impact of our work requires leadership. At WSCA Day on the Hill, discuss the importance of our role as state legislators and schools lead the way in action.
I hope you find a way to flex your leadership muscles in your current behavior. If you feel more motivated, I encourage you to actively seek out opportunities. WSCA might be a good place to start. I don't regret saying, "Yeah, I think I can do it" when Mark Ed sent me to step into a role that gave me a lot of leadership experience.

WSCA needs a multi-faceted board of directors that provides leadership and perspectives to ensure that it is connected to its members. WSCA has a long history as a great school counseling association that benefits from a culture of great leadership.

Smarter work is not harder. We've all heard this term many times, and most likely to students. A Rice Lake Area School District Counselor recently used this phrase. Every day is a constant "firefight" with school counselors. Several years ago (early 2000s), several Rice Lake School Counselors were trained in the multidisciplinary school counseling model under the leadership of school counselor JoAnn Quick. This model was great at the time and did everything related to it. But times change, students change I realized that societies are changing and we're going back to our old ways, and the high school counselor model is on the shelf. A change needs to be made.

During the 2018-19 school year, the Rice Lake School Counseling Department had the opportunity to attend the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) School Counseling Course hosted by WSCA Executive Director Stacy Eslick. This is a two-year, five-day training program: the goal of implementing an elementary school counseling program that creates positive outcomes for students in all school districts. This course is a reformation for our department. During the course, our department built relationships and worked well as a team.

The ASCA course helped us refocus. We begin with a mission and vision statement for each of our departments and schools. We focus on student goals and outcomes. We don't do anything in our program because we think it's the way we've always done it in the past or the best thing. Our curriculum and student groups are information driven and focused. At the beginning of the school year, the counselor meets with the principal to complete and review the yearbook. Now we plan all our time – we have annuals; monthly There are weekly and daily schedules. We all know that advisors need to be flexible and sometimes schedules get thrown out the window because of issues, but we always get back on schedule.

Because of our work, we have learned to improve ourselves. Last year, district school district consultants presented their plan to the Lake District School Board and were recently interviewed on a local radio station about National Education Week.
