San Diego Unified Calendar 2023-2024

Many Americans may think of Labor Day as the end of summer or as a day of rest, parades, picnics, or sales. Labor Day is much more.

Southwest High School

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 by order of the Central Labor Union. The central union encouraged other organizations to follow suit, and by 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday. In 1894, Eugene W. Debs led a strike by members of the American Railroad Workers Union, known as the Pullman Strike. This strike had significant economic consequences, and President Grover Cleveland soon declared it a federal crime and deployed troops to quell it. An outbreak of violence, two men were killed. To calm tensions after the strike, on June 28, 1894, Labor Day was established as a legal holiday on the first Monday in September.

There are many books on Labor Day and the history of labor in the United States, and the library's Manuscript Reading Room has President Cleveland's papers. In addition, the National Archives has a beautiful online photo exhibition called The Way We Worked, which documents the clothing, terrain, conditions and conflicts of our workplaces.

This is why SDUSD needs STRONG unions to "DEMAND" the rights of SDUSD workers against the oppressive, corrupt SDUSD top leadership!

This is why we need the same type of "alliance" for SDUSD parents and taxpayers to "DEMAND" student rights to an education for our children!
